Course Description: This is a study of the life and teachings of Christ as presented in the fourth gospel, John. Students will learn about the writer of the book, the apostle John; the person of Jesus Christ, whom the book is about; and foundational topics within the Christian faith. Students will also learn about how everything in the Bible is relevant and of spiritual use.
Course Objectives:
• • Students will build a firm foundation of understanding of and a desire to return to the gospel of John.
• • Students will train themselves to study a book of the Bible without structured guides.
• • Students will be able to explain historical background, word definitions, and other background information.
• • Students will grasp the overall message of John and the basic message of the Christian faith.
• • Students will examine and transform their lives according to God’s truth.

Materials you should bring to class every day:
- Two notebooks (B5 or A4)
- Loose-leaf paper
- A folder
- Pens, pencils, erasers
- Class textbook (John) and your Bible
Grading:
Tests 40%
Quizzes/projects 30%
Homework/daily assignments 20%
Class participation/notebook 10%
Expectations:
- Come to class with a positive attitude and be ready to learn, explore, and ask questions.
- Be in your seat when the bell rings and begin bellwork immediately at the beginning of class.
- Assignments are expected to be turned in on time; no credit will be given for late assignments.
- During class, be prepared to take notes and participate in class discussions.
Class Rules:
- Respect: Respect each other, your teacher, and all school rules.
- Expectations: Follow the expectations outlined above.
- Materials: Come to class prepared—you should have all necessary books, materials, and assignments when the bell rings.
Participation:
As we learn about the gospel of John together, it is important for you to engage with the ideas you encounter in the texts and during class. One way to deepen your understanding of an idea is to discuss it with other people. Therefore, you are expected to be an active participant in conversation and class discussion in order to grapple with ideas relating to the the Bible and faith, learn to coherently and logically discuss such ideas, and come to a greater understanding of some of the most important questions in life. Participation points will be subtracted if you come unprepared to class (such as by not having necessary books or materials) or are off-task; participation points will be added when you ask relevant questions, voluntarily answer questions, or take part in class discussions.
